GTA Civils & Transport has provided flood risk and civil engineering design services for a proposed housing development at Brooklands Approach in Romford.
The project involves demolition of 4 industrial units to make way for two new build 5-storey housing blocks comprising 67 flats, plus car parking and access.
The site is in the Environment Agency’s fluvial Flood Zone 2 – Medium Risk, namely flooding from rivers. It is also liable to flood from surface water – also know as overland flow – flooding, to a depth of 0.42m.
The main design challenge was to prevent flood waters from entering the basement car park. This will be achieved through the installation of 0.72m high automatic flood barriers.
